More Than Local Content: Poland’s PROMOT Joins the Global Abrams Program

In the largest defense programs, the stakes are no longer limited to the procurement of equipment. They also include the role of Polish industry in global supply chains. The Abrams program demonstrates that local content can mean more than polonization: Polish companies are manufacturing components used in the sustainment and production of vehicles worldwide, with some of these components already going into new Abrams tanks soon to be delivered to the Polish Armed Forces.

One such example is the cooperation between General Dynamics Land Systems and Promot. Promot is a Polish family company specializing in metal processing, forgings, CNC machining, work with special steels, and aluminum. Capabilities of this kind are particularly important in military programs, where repeatability, the highest standards of workmanship, process qualification, and the ability to operate in line with the rigorous requirements of a global manufacturer are essential.

Promot is one of eight Polish suppliers currently producing components for Abrams tanks. In total, Polish companies are now manufacturing 52 components supporting both tank sustainment and production. This means that local content in the Abrams program is not merely a declaration. It is a process through which Polish companies, capabilities, and parts are being integrated into a strategic supply chain, strengthening local industry, supply security, and the resilience of the entire support system.

“Integrating Polish companies into our supply chain builds capabilities that matter not only for Poland’s Abrams fleet, but also for the global community of operators of this platform,” said Christopher Brown, Vice President of Global Strategy and International Business Development at General Dynamics Land Systems.

The importance of such projects goes beyond individual orders. Joining the Abrams program gives Polish suppliers the opportunity to operate within a global ecosystem that includes more than 10 user countries and over 5,000 Abrams tanks worldwide. For GDLS, cooperation with Promot provides access to a partner with rare and highly specialized metal processing capabilities. For Promot, it is an opportunity to validate its expertise and capabilities gained in automotive amongst one of the most demanding supply chains in the defense sector.

“Our cooperation with GDLS is a recognition of the quality of the parts we produce. We are proud that later this year Polish soldiers will receive Abrams tanks containing components manufactured at our facilities. This is a major responsibility, because every part matters for the safety and reliability of the entire platform,” said Przemysław Chybiorz, President of the Management Board of Promot.

The Abrams program in Poland currently includes 366 tanks on order and the development of sustainment and maintenance capabilities at the Regional Sustainment Center in Poznań. However, another dimension of cooperation is becoming increasingly important: building a domestic supply chain and preparing Polish industry for broader participation in the program. This is particularly significant amid growing demand for military equipment, spare parts, and capabilities to maintain combat readiness on NATO’s eastern flank. Without formal offset, a functioning ecosystem is taking shape: component production, sustainment, training, supplier development, and the building of capabilities across the entire equipment life cycle.

The current cooperation is only the beginning. The participation of Polish companies in the Abrams program creates a foundation for further expansion of local content, the integration of additional companies into the supply chain, and the co-production of Abrams tanks in Poland. In this model, the procurement of equipment does not mark the end of the industrial relationship. Instead, it becomes the starting point for building lasting capabilities — for the military, industry, and the broader economy.
