STERLING HEIGHTS, Michigan – General Dynamics Land Systems, a global leader in the design and manufacture of ground combat systems, today announced the completion of a multiyear, multimillion-dollar modernization of its headquarters facility.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel and leaders from the U.S. armed services and defense industrial base were on hand to celebrate the milestone and the company’s impact on the state and beyond.
“We are proud to call Michigan home, and we are deeply committed to our mission to deliver innovative products to the men and women of the military,” said Dave Paddock, president of General Dynamics Land Systems. “Our investment in internal research and development, not to mention our enterprise infrastructure, such as our newly renovated headquarters, supports thousands of families and local businesses and strengthens the economy.”
“Michigan’s leadership in national defense drives billions in economic impact and tens of thousands of good-paying jobs,” said Governor Whitmer. “General Dynamics Land Systems’ new headquarters will support its nearly 2,000 employees and continue its strong contributions to Michigan’s defense industry. Let’s keep working together to both protect our nation and grow Michigan’s economy.”
General Dynamics Land Systems’ headquarters in Sterling Heights was built in 1987 and is home to nearly 2,000 employees who engineer, develop and support Abrams main battle tanks, Stryker infantry combat vehicles, SGT Stout air-defense platforms, Small Multipurpose Equipment Transport ground robots and various software solutions.
The company’s products are fielded throughout the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps and allied armed forces across the globe.
The renovation of the headquarters building ran from November 2024-June 2026 and included the elimination of file cabinets, the implementation of LED office lighting with modern controls and daylight harvesting, and an increase of approximately 100 desk seats, in addition to many aesthetic and design enhancements.
In terms of economic impact, General Dynamics Land Systems spent $1.1 billion in the state of Michigan in 2022-25. Since 2018, it has spent $400 million on internal research and development (IRAD) and $108 million in capital expenditure (CAPEX).
