STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. -- The U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) has awarded General Dynamics Land Systems its 1996 Contractor Excellence Award. In winning the award, Land Systems was selected over 2,200 other eligible defense contractors from whom TACOM purchases material.

Major General Edward L. Andrews, Commanding General of TACOM, presented the award to Arthur J. Veitch, Land Systems president, at a ceremony in Sterling Heights, Michigan last Thursday. "You can be very proud of receiving this award which is very significant to us," said General Andrews. "The competition was very intense and your accomplishments are very impressive." In receiving the award, Arthur Veitch recognized the extraordinary team effort, which has become the norm at Land Systems, and pledged the company's continued support to "provide the U.S. Army the highest quality and most affordable weapons systems possible."

Land Systems won TACOM's 1996 Contractor Excellence Award for its: 1) outstanding efforts in the area of quality assurance management; 2) ever improving tank quality; 3) active partnering with the government which produced savings that allowed the Abrams Tank Upgrade Program to obtain a production rate of 120 tanks per year instead of the planned baseline of 97 tanks; and 4) departure from the usual way of doing business which represents a significant paradigm shift showing the willingness to embrace acquisition reform and to streamline the process.

General Dynamics Land Systems, a division of General Dynamics Corporation, is a world leader in the development, production, and support of armored vehicles and electronic systems. Its 3,400 employees operate plants and facilities in seven states and at three international locations.
